Charlie's 9 and 10 Month Update

Charlie has come a long way in the past 2 months!

Growth: Weight: 20.06 lbs (54%)
              Length: 28.1 inches (33%)

              Head circumference: 17.9 inches (58%)

Sleep:  We introduced Charlie to his own bedroom and crib sooner than originally planned.  (The new American Pediatrics Association's recommendations are to keep your child in your room for a year to decrease SIDS...and we didn't want to trek across the house and down stairs every 1-2 hours in the middle of the night).  The first night in his room went extremely well; seems like Charlie just wanted his own space and he slept through the night!

Eating: This kid is like a garbage disposal.  We can't cut up the food fast enough to keep up!  His current favorites are: kiwi, blackberries, bananas, blueberries and peas.  Of course, half the food ends up all over him, the chair and the floor.  A co-worker's puppy came for a visit and it was refreshing to have someone else clean up the floor!

Changes: About 3 weeks ago Charlie started going from prone to sitting.  He continued to get around in every direction except for forwards.  On Monday evening we were all playing in the family room and out of no where he started crawling!  This immediately upset Lucy as Charlie started getting into her toys. So begins more tears and battles.

Adventures: The past 2 months have been a little more quiet than usual, which has been relaxing.  It also kicks up the urge to travel.  We did a fun ski weekend at the cabin with 4 other families.  Charlie joined us, but Lucy got to stay in Stevens Point for a special weekend with Grandpa and Grandma Hyland.  1 month later was our trip to Hayward for a 4 day weekend of snow, skiing, more snow and more skiing!  This also included 3 other families so Charlie has his buddies Bjorn, Finn, and Andie to play with while Lucy looked over all the younger kiddos.  In the middle we also did 3 fun day adventures which included 2 trips to Levis Mounds for skiing (Lucy rode in the trailer and Charlie in a backpack and then we borrowed a double trailer the second time).  Charlie got to whip around on some fun hills by accident when Isaac got lost!  We also did a hike at the Kickapoo Valley reserve and saw their ice caves and a very warm weekend.

5 families fill a cabin with lots of energy!

Taking a little ski trip over to the island on Crawlingstone Lake

Seeing the island by skis; a little different than by boat in the summer.

Charlie goes all directions but forward last month.

Skiing at Levis Mounds in Black River Falls.  Charlie fell asleep soon after this picture.

You can't see them, but both Lucy and Charlie are in the trailer.  We enjoyed more skiing while the snow was falling.  A welcome site compared to the lack of snow in La Crosse.

Charlie and Lucy got a play date with their friends Bjorn, Finn, Andie and Lily.  The babies are all within 5 months of each other.

Bjorn and Charlie think Jack's face looks a little bit funny.

Sully

In memory of Sully
Sully's first night in his new home, January 27th, 2010.  I had to hold his chin up to even get a picture of him.

Within a couple months Sully was confident and held his tail high and proud.
Sully joining our announcement of Lucy!  He didn't think twice about jumping into the bike trailer!

This is  a post I've been putting off for quite some time as it feels like another finality. January 27th would have marked the 8 year anniversary of Sully joining our family.  Sully passed suddenly on December 19th.  We woke to hear him struggling to move around at 4am and immediately called the emergency vet.  She said we could bring him in at 7am that morning, but we never made it there.  In the meantime, Isaac carried him downstairs so he could be on his bed. Charlie and Lucy woke up and Sully was very aware of their presence and passed quickly after Lucy joined his side. I feel, with out a doubt, he needed to know his whole family was accounted for before he could move on.  He dutifully took on the role of protector when he joined this family.  He disliked when someone needed to break off from a family walk or run.  He didn't like leaving the house when some of the family was still there.  He wouldn't go to bed for the night until each person was also in bed.

Sully taught Isaac and me about true responsibility, love and trust. This dog had no reason to trust anyone when we adopted him.  He literally crawled across the floor when he met Isaac for the first time.  He was malnourished and had wounds on his neck.  His tail hung limply and if you threw him a toy it would just hit him in the face. Over the next year, he excelled in his obedience class, became socialized with many dog and human friends and went out into the world with his tail held high (like a "flagship" as Isaac and I would say).

It was a true honor to earn Sully's trust, and I think that's part of why this goodbye was especially hard.  He was more than "just a dog".  We miss our friend and family member and remember him fondly.

Several weeks after Sully died, Lucy had an especially hard drop off at school.  Mrs. Haro scooped her up and told her they would make a card together.  She asked Lucy what she wanted to say, and these are Lucy's words.  It's amazing to see that she was still processing the loss of her dog and there were feelings she still needed to get out.

Sully easily accepted Charlie into his pack.  I will miss seeing their relationship grow as they seemed to have a special bond.  Charlie might even be crawling by now if he had his dog to chase after.
An old photo collage we found.  Ella was another good buddy of Sully's and he often stayed with her when we were gone for weekend trips.

Always happy to come down to the dock for sunset.  He would often get a drink from the lake but otherwise stayed very dry.
