Xmas Morning

I missed the best part. Lucy bolted over to shovel the wrapping paper, got to the pile, stepped on some and went flying through the pile onto the floor!

Ummmm.....

Yesterday we were driving back to La Crosse from our xc ski vacation. It was late and Lucy wad tired and refusing to sleep in the van. All of a sudden Lucy said "Hey, can I get a beer?"

Today we drove past our rental and I explained how renting works and that we hope it'll help.pay for her to go to college. She replied "yeah, so I can drink wine. I want to go to college and drink wine. I want to go to college with girls only, girls are the best. Boys don't hit and take your toys."

Ringing in the Holidays

While dancing on the coffee table, Lucy proclaimed "Here's my bell, watch it Jingle!" as she pulls down her pants and shakes her bare butt.

Charlie 8 Month Update

Growth: no updates on the stats this month.  Charlie will have his 9 month well check in January.  He seems to be filling out and is very solid though.

Sleep:  We re-started the sleep training this month as Charlie's growth and eating seemed to stabilize and we physically couldn't handle our lack of sleep anymore. It was going really well and Charlie was starting to sleep through the night...and then he got sick.  He was having breathing difficulties and had be be on an inhaler and prendisone to calm his lungs down.  We are now starting back almost to square one, but the amount of crying was only 25 minutes last night before a long stretch of sleep.

Eating: Charlie is starting to like green veggies more and still loves his banana type foods.  He can take down almost 2 jars of food when really hungry. He's also working on his pincer grip to get the puffs cereal to his mouth.

Changes: The biggest change this month has been his vocalizations.  He now says "mamamama" and "dadada" which is fun.  He's such a laid back baby that it's really slowing down his progress with mobility I think.  He does slowly move away from the original spot you set him though (and this makes him really mad as he scoots backwards away from his toys and is eventually left with nothing to play with.

Uh oh, check out that hair!!!

Charlie loves being outside and when he's all bundles up he just holds still and looks around with big eyes.  We've been enjoying having he golf course shut down before the ski season starts.

Charlie with his Godparents.  Hopefully he's not so much trouble that he needs 3!

The dunk.  We have a similar picture/reaction with Lucy.  Charlie didn't cry a bit.

These two just look like trouble...

Awwww.

Charlie 7 Month Update

Well, 6 months came and went.  So here's Charlie's 7 month update!  He had his 6 month well child visit and here are the stats:
Weight: 17.46 lbs (43.4%)
Length: 26.0 inches (15%)
Head circumference: 16.9 inches (26.6%)

We had just started some sleep training the night before this appointment as Charlie has been waking more and more frequently to the point where I felt he couldn't possibly be hungry.  The doctor pointed out that he's having a dip on his growth chart which typically indicates a growth spurt is happening...and he is indeed likely hungry.  That caused me a pretty good pang of "Mom guilt".

Food: Charlie has been eating more and more solids over the past 2 months.  He loves fruit, tolerates sweet veggies (like carrots) and cannot stand green veggies.  He's an easy going guy, but will turn red and squeal if you are giving him a food he does not want. His newest trick is an emphatic head shake (as if saying NO) while you attempt to feed him.  He can't possibly know what NO means yet, can he?!

Milestones:  Charlie can now go "forever" in sitting without help.  This has definitely improved his play time satisfaction.  He also continues to fiercely explore the world through his mouth.  Any attempt to read him a book results in his attempt to eat every single page.  He is not turning out to be the book lover that Lucy was at his age.  Movement is a constant and you can tell he just wants to crawl so badly.  In tummy time he looks like a little frog with arms and legs moving fast but getting him no where.  When you hold him he constantly jumps, stands, kicks and wiggles. I get the sense we will actually need to baby proof our house this time around.

Sleep:  Please tell me we will sleep again someday!? Charlie wakes at least twice per night with a need to have his nuk put back in and then at least one additional time to be fed around 2-3 am.  He also is consistently up for the day around 5 am.  Mom is currently recovering from week 3 of pneumonia, so Dad has been kind enough to take the whole night shift downstairs.  This kid does nap like a champ though...so...lucky Paula!
Charlie got to hang out with Grandpa and Grandma Hyland for a week while Mom did a continuing education course in Stevens Point.  He and Grandpa are buddies and like to sing songs together.

Hanging out in tummy time.

Charlie's eyes are tricky.  They are brownish one day, and blue the next.  We think he'll just be hazel like his sister.

Lucy is 3 years old!

Lucy is our lively, independent and deep thinking 3 year old.  She is the tallest in her 3K class so we figured she must be moving up the growth charts.  Here's her most recent stats from the 3 year well visit:
32.85 lbs (71.5%)
38 inches tall (73.4%)

Favorite Book:  Any Berenstain Bear book.  We have at least 40 of them and it's not uncommon for Lucy to have a stack of 20 in her bed.  She's the true definition of 'book worm'.  She affectionately calls them "Papa Bear books".

Favorite Song:  For awhile she was definitely on a "Ho Hey" kick but now she's happy to hear anything by the Lumineers.  "Charlie Boy" is also a new favorite of hers.  She can tell us the titles of most Lumineers songs and can pick them out on the radio.  Looks like we'll need to take her to a concert someday!

Favorite Show:  Lucy has been unwavering in her dedication to Dora The Explorer.  Unfortunately Amazon only has one season free online, so we are seeing a lot of re-runs.

Favorite Food:  Mac N Cheese is Lucy's steadfast favorite (especially white shells). She often tries her luck at eating this multiple nights in a row...and on weeks when we are really beat down, she sometimes succeeds (and I never thought I'd be that parent..HA).

Favorite Movie: We recently started watching a movie together as a family on weekends when we are home (which isn't real often).  Our first ever movie night was "Moana" and Lucy was a fan.  She also likes the special popcorn we get at the store for movie night.

Favorite Toy: This varies, but Lucy comes back to her farm on a pretty regular basis.  She also loves to have a Lumineers concert on the TV while she plays her drum or tambourine along with the music.

Milestones: The main two milestones of the year were potty training and getting rid of Oo-Oo (the monkey nuk).  Mom and Dad weren't sure either of these were going to happen before age 4 for awhile.  We've learned that Lucy is an observer and thinker who likes to succeed rather than practice.  We let her watch tons of potty videos and eventually she just started doing it on her own. Dr. Weber was a key piece in graduating from Oo-Oo as she explained to Lucy that she's too big of a girl for a nuk. Lucy was hesitantly agreeable at the doctor's appointment but tried her best to negotiate out of it at home.  She has trouble falling asleep as easily now, but she has never had screaming fits about it and has never really looked back once she realized it was a done deal.

Lucy is always full of funny expressions.  Now she's catching on to posing in cut outs.

Lucy's special Dora cake for her 3rd birthday.  She really enjoyed getting sang to.

This was quite the hilarious event until Lucy realized she couldn't get her head out.  (Mom and Dad weren't sure it was going to come out either!).  Lesson learned.

Start of Fall 2017

Lucy visited Fergussons Apple Orchard. She also discovered a firewoman. She asked me if she sits on the right on the fire engine. I told her "Lucy, she sits on the left. She drives the truck." Charlie explores Sully (Sully was super patient and kind). Lucy helped bake her school bday treat. Afterwards she hopped up on the counter.

Pizza Night 3 Year Old Party

Everybody is turning 3. Lucy had a lot of fun there, but doesn't remember having any fun 30 minutes after the party. Guess we aren't going to Disney Land!

Lucy's 2nd Week at School

Week 2:
Lucy really got the hang of school this time around.  She tried the potty before school with out crying and made it through the full session without any accidents.  She literally tried every activity available to her during free-play and she just plain wore herself out!

Making a fruit loop necklace.
Trying out the costume corner.  Her other favorite costume was a fire-fighter.  She hasn't found the princess dresses yet...although she probably doesn't know that's what they are.

Working on her math skills! (And unsuccessfully holding off on eating skittles until the activity was done).

The sensory table is always a favorite.  (Thank goodness this isn't in our house because all those grains of rice and beans set me on edge).
Rocking away with her friend Maddie in the play room.

Waiting patiently in line with friend Liam to go to the play room.

Charlie 5 Months

Highlights of the month:  We said "Farewell" to summer with one last weekend at the Cabin.  We had a beautiful day to play on the lake and Charlie got to enjoy some time to kick around on the boat while Lucy splashed in the chilly water at the sandbar.  The school year started and now Charlie spends full days at Paula's.  He has hit his groove and is able to do his usual 2 hour naps and drinks his bottles like a champ.

Sleep:   Charlie tends to fall asleep for the night around 8:30-9pm.  He does well until around 2am and then either needs repetitive "re-nuking" or to be re-swaddled.  He does not ever need to be fed anymore but we are still waking several times per night just to tend to him.  This is prolonging his stay in our bedroom as we don't want to be trekking downstairs and across the house to put a nuk in several times per night.

Changes:  Charlie loves watching his sister Lucy and no one can make him laugh or smile quicker than she can!  He started eating solids 2 weeks ago and seems pretty indifferent to rice cereal. He doesn't gag on it though, so I think the future solids will come along well and he'll likely enjoy something tastier.  Still no rolling over although he starts rocking side to side when he's excited.  He can sit up by himself if he leans forward (just discovered that today), and helps turn the pages in his books if he's paying attention.

The whole family enjoying a great last sunset of the summer at the lake.  (I love seeing Isaac in SPASH apparel).

Kicking around at the sandbar.

The first bite of rice cereal!  He seems ok with it!

Meal time is such a production.

The first ride out on the Double Bob.  Both kids loved it!  While I was gathering supplies, Lucy and Charlie were hanging out.  I asked Lucy if she was doing ok and she said: "We are doing great in our new stroller Mom!"

Charlie has a special nuk now too (Lucy is never far from her Monkey "oo-oo").  This is his first time using the nuk and he put the Moose right on his face!  Now we often find him sucking on the moose's leg instead of the nuk.

Final Days of Summer 2017

Lucy, Charlie, Sully and Dad went to the Orange Park this morning. It was hard pulling Lucy away. She has become quite the fence climber. The kiddos went to Paula's for a half day so Dad could run errands and get ready for Pischke Summer 2017 Family Weekend. He may have also gotten some of his hair dyed. This evening Lucy and Dad looked at plants with a master gardener (I plan to buy what she needs to split off next spring).  I promised Lucy an ice cream cone for being so patient... We ended up detouring to the farmers market where Lucy ate whole carrots and tipped her local musician. Then we made our way to Rudy's for a cone. Lucy was very neat with it until the very end when things got a little sloppy.

Lucy Sings and is a Monkey

Bunny Cake with Meema

This was back in April, a couple weeks after Charlie was born.   https://youtu.be/ODDxKs6hagg

August in photos

Mom and Dad got out for a date to The Mint for 'Noodle Night' and then took the kids to the neighborhood block party.  Lucy's favorite fire truck was there and she got 2 rides around the block.

Lucy's first icecream cone ever!  She is officially a fan.  Afterwards we walked down to the River Roast concert at the Charmant and watched a little bit of Horseshoes and Handgrenades.

We did a quick visit to the Madison zoo, saw Kerry's old college roommate Abby, went to Kerry's gradeschool friend Julie's wedding reception and then spent the night at the Hopp's house.  The kids had fun playing together, especially with the stickers.

Isaac's whole family gathered for the weekend.  Charlie scored lot of Auntie Amanda time :)

Charlie like to suck on his lip at times if he doesn't have his nuk, teething toy or hand in his mouth.

The kiddos on Mom's birthday.  Lucy has paint all over her face from the beautiful card she made me!
