Grandads Bluff Tree Dance

There's a new Christmas tree on the top of Grandad's Bluff. Every day Charlie asks to go up there and dance by it.  Charlie specified several times he wants to take the music box up there and listen to The Yellow Submarine.  Well the kids got cold feet and took some encouraging to actually dance while we were up there.  Youtube and the Beatles weren't happy I used their song, so they edited out some of the sound.

Finn's B-day Party - Bounce House

This was Charlie's first time actually in a bounce house - he's always been scared because it's "too bouncy" and never actually stepped foot in.

Lucy's rock song was recorded from inside a closed door.  She was really belting it!

The Treasure Hunt

Grandpa found some pretty tricky spots to hide the clues!  Ryan, Cayla and Lucy were always in hot pursuit of the clues.  Charlie enjoyed running from spot to spot but then found other diversions instead of looking for clues :).
Ryan became the official clue reader.
The treasure has been found!  The boathouse refrigerator held the silver treasure canister!
Hooray for candy!!!

The Last Hurrah of Summer

We were able to take an extended weekend at the cabin over Labor Day Weekend before plunging into the school year.  We drove up Thursday night after work and stayed through late morning on Monday.  The weather was unusually cool and the water was icy compared to what we were used to feeling! One of the nicest days of the weekend was on Kerry's birthday (although the coldest she can ever remember waking up to at 42 degrees).  The Hopps came up to join us on Saturday afternoon.  Lucy and Cayla were like long lost friends and all of the kids got along so well.  The kids especially enjoyed a treasure hunt created by "Grandpa Keith".
They could throw rocks into the lake for hours!

Charlie spent most of the summer being opposed to paddling and water in general but he came around!

Charlie has a new love for minnows; he especially likes holding them.

Lucy told Cayla they needed to sit by the light so she could read the book...even though she doesn't know how to read words yet :)

Happy 50th Anniversary

We had a fun weekend celebrating Grandma and Grandpa Hyland's 50th Wedding Anniversary earlier in August.  Friday night we played lawn games, ate Mickey's pizza and had ice-cream cake.  Saturday included a spa morning for the girls, golf for the guys, and then a beautiful night out at The Muse at Sentry World.  Here's a peak at the couple at 50 years and on their wedding day!

Charlie 2 Year Update (Yes 5 months late)

Growth at check up:
Height: 34.0" (34th%)
Weight: 27.78 lbs (45th%)
Head circumference: 19.2" (49th%)

Charlie definitely changed gears around the 2 year mark.  Our previously easy going and agreeable child is now very opinionated.  He also takes his role of a pesky little brother very seriously by pushing and hitting Lucy, knocking her towers down, and singing louder than she prefers.  He is so used to saying "I'm Sorry" that sometimes he says that instead of "Thank you" out of habit.
His newest phrase when being asked to do something or if he wants something is: "Yes but No".  Or even worse: "No but No".  Despite these things he is also a snugly and affectionate child who melts our hearts.

Favorite Movie: The Grinch (the "new" one) and Cat in the Hat.

Favorite Book: This goes in streaks, but some favorites are:
-Polar Bear, Polar Bear
-Surfer Chick
-Mr. Brown

Favorite Songs:
-ABC's (Charlie and Dad really belt this one out at bed time).
-Twinkle, Twinkle
-Wishing Well

Lucy's First Day (of riding a bus)!

Lucy has been looking forward to this day for at least two years... riding a bus to school!  It turns out the bus doesn't run for the first two days of 4k, which threw everyone for a loop on the first day of school.

Saturday July 20th Fort Collins to Colorado Springs (Cheyenne Mt. State Park)

We drove around a bit of the Colorado State campus in the morning on the way to our hike.  The hike went up a foothill and looked down on the city.  Lucy lead most of the hike.  On the way down she saw a snake.  Ironically, that night we would read a book about the human body, nerves and emergency responses and had a good example to compare it to.

More road tripping!

Friday July 18th - Arrive in Fort Collins

We left Thursday around 9 PM -- had a visit neighborhood clinic for a second time that day, this time to plead for antibiotic.  Doctor was amazing, but then we had to wait for pharmacy.   So later depart than we hoped, but we're not in a hurry.  Kids were a little restless in the car and took a while to sleep.  We dodged two big storms in Iowa, just skirting the outside of them.  It made for fun driving seeing the big clouds light up though.  We stopped near the NE/CO border at a rest stop.  Lucy was excited to get out and explore the little picnic huts all over the ground.  Unfortunately she lost sense of where we were and got lost.  She kept sprinting farther and farther away (closer to interstate).  Kerry yelled and chased and eventually got Lucy's attention.  This was Lucy's first "I lost my parents" incident ever.  Not the most pleasant occurrence on the side of an interstate.

And with about an hour to go, the kiddos NEEDED to get out of the car again.  So we made some lunch at a rest stop. The kids (and Isaac) played with some other guests' dogs and climbed rocks.

Cheyenne, WY Rest Stop

We arrived at Paul and Lisa's in Fort Collins around noon.  The kids were super excited to be there.  So excited we couldn't get the excited buggers down for a nap.  Isaac took Charlie on a van ride and eventually got him a bit of a nap.  Kerry snuggled Lucy to sleep.  Isaac returned with an awoken Charlie and traded spots with Kerry to get some ZZZs with Lucy.

We ventured out to Fat Tire Brewery and Old Town Fort Collins.  Old Town had a very fun feel.  We listened to a concert, got Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream and some fantastic Burritos with fried potatoes.
Lucy hadn't seen Paul and Lisa since she was 2, and Charlie since he was 10 weeks old, but they reconnected quite quickly.

What do you do with exhausted kids while you wait for burritos?  Lift 'em up!

June 10th - 18th

Charlie has his own style

Looks like a chokehold to me, but I'm pretty sure that's not what's going on.

We hosted some friends for dinner.  The kiddos had a blast playing together.  Suddenly it got quiet.  We found them all behind the couch.

Paula took the kiddos down for a picnic at Riverside

Lucy drove Charlie around.  I hope he doesn't do that to her when she really starts to drive him around.

Lucy had blueberry pancakes one morning.  Charlie preferred blueberries in pancake powder.

Bike Ride down to Moon Tunes 6.13.19

Kerry and I hauled the kids via bike down to moontunes to catch up with some friends.  Kerry also caught some flack for not being close enough to our kids while in the train (we were both about 30 feet away - and look how happy they are... helicopter parents).  On the way home we got to listen to a group of bagpipers practicing at UWL.

Camping at Blue Mounds State Park June 7th - 9th

The Husks and Pischkes camped at Blue Mounds State Park and attended the Hoffman Family Reunion.  Kerry arrived late afternoon to set up camp (she saw Paul McCartney the night before in Madison and stayed in town) followed by Amanda and the boys (Bryan had  a gig) and then Isaac and the kiddos.

The hammock was an immediate hit at campsite #15 and 16

Eating was another hit.  Pudgey Pie grilled cheese followed by S'mores!

Charlies favorite campsite activity was sitting in the (new and clean) fire ring.

He also preferred eating in the fire ring (way more fun than a picnic table)

Friday night the kiddos did not sleep well. Both were up late and awake very early.  It made for some moodiness but we got through it.  We went to the playground, climbed a fire tower (amazing view) and then wanderedto the amphitheater where Lucy and Eli performed.  During Lucy's hip hop dance, Charlie got comfortable on the floor (that's how tired he was... he got to bed real early Saturday night)
